The Unit of Environmental Engineering (IUT) is part of the biggest Education and Research Institution in western Austria, which is the University Innsbruck. The IUT belongs to the Department of Infrastructure Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. The IUT seeks to fill a position within the basic research project “Data Science in Urban water management”.

Central in the investigation is the application of data science methods (such as statistical models, machine learning, predictive analysis) to the case of pandemic wastewater surveillance. Wastewater-based epidemiology is the evidence of viral load (such as the recent SARS-CoV-2 virus) in the wastewater. The measured viral-RNA is introduced into the sewer systems by viral shedding of infected persons. The thesis aims to estimate the pandemic dynamics in the sewer catchment from the viral load signal. Key underlying mechanism are the spatial dimension of the virus entry into the system and transport and fate of virus in the sewer system. The successful candidate will develop novel numerical models for analysis and prediction of system behavior – potentially also applying the methods to other problems in urban water engineering. A thorough understanding of principles of sanitary engineering is thus prerequisite for a successful application as well as evidenced experience with programming (C, C++, Python, R, MATLAB etc.)

We expect:

  • MSc. Natural Sciences preferably in civil/environmental engineering
  • Documented skills in modelling and programming (Python, R, MATLAB, C++)
  • Detailed understanding of urban hydrology and drainage system
  • Detailed understanding in data science methods and statistics
  • Excellent communication and writing skills in both German and English

We offer a 4-year PhD position in an exciting, multidisciplinary and internationally linked research environment. The position is advertised as initially 20 hours per week PhD position, but increased to 30 hours per week as soon as an Expose for the PhD work is handed in. The overall gross salary per year is EUR 31 206.- (according to University guidelines).
