Offer Description

The PhD student will research methods to quantify, support and improve the trustworthiness of 6G communications, with a focus on mission-critical applications in dynamic industrial environments with communication requirements such as ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). By ensuring trustworthy communication in 6G networks, research will cover frameworks for assessing and improving network resilience and reliability to deliver trustworthy performance even in high-demand scenarios.

Research will focus on the development of environmental sensing technologies that can be used to predict the near future of communication scenarios in order to improve communication quality and achieve near-deterministic communication performance. Localisation, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) and other methods should be explored for this purpose. The integration of both AI methods and advanced signal processing to interpret and analyse the environment will be a key aspect of this research, especially in challenging conditions such as severe multipath propagation and non-line-of-sight scenarios.

Theoretical research will be applied to real industrial environments such as smart manufacturing, automated logistics and precision agriculture. Collaboration with industry partners to understand their unique challenges and develop 6G-enabled solutions to improve efficiency and productivity will be an integral part of the research.

Additional Information
Eligibility criteria

In order for a JS candidate to be eligible for CRYSTALLINE, she or he has to comply with the MSCA-COFUND Doctoral Program (DP) eligibility rules, specific CRYSTALLINE application requirements, and with fundamental ethic principles.

The MSCA-COFUND DP rules require
researchers to (i) be doctoral candidates, i.e., not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the call deadline (whereas researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible), and to (ii) meet the MSCA mobility rule, i.e., have not resided and/or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Austria for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline (time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention is not taken into account).

The CRYSTALLINE application requirements are met if an applicant (i) holds a master’s degree in a technical discipline, (ii) provides a complete set of application documents, and (iii) complies with the submission rules for the application documents as laid out at the CRYSTALLINE website.
