Offer Description

The use of accurate sensing information about the environment is expected to play a key role in pushing the limits of future communication networks such as 6G to the next level, be it in terms of throughput, latency, or link robustness. One promising idea is the concept of Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), aiming for a symbiotic combination of both in a single system. While such a combination is desirable for many reasons, such as efficient resource utilization of the available radio frequency spectrum, it requires fundamental design changes compared to the state-of-the-art approach of designing and optimizing individual systems. In addition, the expected benefits of ISAC make its implementation in mass-market consumer devices likely in the near future, with new challenges such as imperfect low-level hardware or massive multi-user communication scenarios that hinder the desire for accurate sensing information.

The aim of this research is to investigate and explore PHY layer based ISAC concepts with a focus on the deployment in real-world communication scenarios, using advanced signal processing and/or AI methods, exploring innovative sensor technologies, and implementing concepts on real hardware.

Additional Information
Eligibility criteria

In order for a JS candidate to be eligible for CRYSTALLINE, she or he has to comply with the MSCA-COFUND Doctoral Program (DP) eligibility rules, specific CRYSTALLINE application requirements, and with fundamental ethic principles.

The MSCA-COFUND DP rules require
researchers to (i) be doctoral candidates, i.e., not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the call deadline (whereas researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible), and to (ii) meet the MSCA mobility rule, i.e., have not resided and/or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Austria for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline (time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention is not taken into account).

The CRYSTALLINE application requirements are met if an applicant (i) holds a master’s degree in a technical discipline, (ii) provides a complete set of application documents, and (iii) complies with the submission rules for the application documents as laid out at the CRYSTALLINE website.
