The University of Adelaide Research Scholarship is established by the University of Adelaide to support full-time PhD students who are commencing research in pure mathematics in the area of 4-manifolds and Seiberg-Witten gauge theory.
Topic of Research:
The topic of research will be the geometry and topology of smooth 4-manifolds. The PhD student will investigate exotic phenomena related to 4-manifolds such as: exotic diffeomorphisms, exotic group actions and exotic families. Two structures on a smooth 4-manifold are considered “exotic” if they are topologically equivalent but smoothly distinct. Exoticness is detected by differential invariants constructed from Seiberg-Witten gauge theory.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be students who are acceptable as candidates for a PhD degree at the University of Adelaide.
Stipend:
The scholarship will be for 3.5 years and has a stipend of $34,210 (indexed annually) per annum.
It is likely to be tax exempt, subject to Taxation Office approval. Details of any terms and/or benefits can be found in the Conditions of Award .
