Overview

The Magdalena Mauchle Scholarship aims to provide financial support to a student who can demonstrate financial hardship to help them achieve their educational goals whilst undertaking the Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles at UTS. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate one or more other educational barriers.


Who is eligible?

To be eligible an applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or holder of an Australian permanent resident visa or permanent humanitarian visa; or the holder of a Temporary Protection Visa[1] ;
  • Be enrolled full-time in the second or third year of the:
    • Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles (C10306); or
    • Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation (C10321); or
    • Bachelor of Design in Fashion and Textiles Bachelor of International Studies (C10307)
  • Completed a minimum of 36 credit points in one of the above courses;
  • Achieved a minimum Pass Average (WAM 50 or above) over the duration of their current UTS course;
  • Apply through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) for an Equity Scholarship [2] and therein demonstrate financial disadvantage and  education barriers including:
    • Regional or remote background
    • English language difficulty
    • Sole parent responsibilities
    • Carer responsibilities
    • Long-term medical condition, disability, or ongoing effect of abuse
    • Indigenous Australian
    • Refugee status

[1] Have temporary asylum seeker or refugee residence status and hold a Bridging Visa E or A (and has made an application for a Protection Visa), or Temporary Protection Visa (Subclass 785), or Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (Subclass 790)


[2] Students may make an appointment for an alternative financial assessment with the UTS Financial Assistance Service in the Student Services Unit in order to evidence financial disadvantage. This is only available in cases when an applicant has been deemed ineligible on the basis of not meeting the financial hardship criteria as specified above and as outlined in the UAC application, or has been unable to submit an Equity Scholarship.


Selection process

As demonstrated in the scholarship application

  • Evidence of financial hardship via the UAC Equity Scholarship application ;
  • Motivation and passion to succeed in their undergraduate Fashion and Textiles degree
  • Initiative in extra-curricular and non-academic activities

Preference will also be given to applicants on the basis of:

  • Academic merit (WAM) in their undergraduate degree to date; and/or
  • Demonstration of one or more educational disadvantages in addition to financial hardship via the UAC Equity Scholarship application , including:
    • Carer responsibilities;
    • English language difficulty;
    • Indigenous Australian;
    • Long-term medical condition, disability, or ongoing effect of abuse;
    • Refugee status;
    • Regional or remote background;
    • Sole parent responsibilities

Other information

When applying through UAC for a UTS Equity Scholarship, Family Tax Benefit will not be considered as demonstrative of financial hardship. Only applicants receiving a Centrelink means-tested income support payment, or demonstrating exceptional financial hardship with supporting evidence will be considered.
