The Heart Foundation PhD Scholarship

The Heart Foundation is offering funding for successful applicants to attain a research based postgraduate degree (Doctor of Philosophy or Research Masters Degree). It will support outstanding graduates early in their careers so they can be trained to conduct cardiovascular health and medical research that is internationally competitive.

The research may lead to the translation into practice. If so, the PhD proposals should clearly cite the evidence that is implemented from the guidelines and/or published into systematic reviews.

Demonstration of translation and implementation methodologies and stakeholder and/or consumer engagement and co-design are also strongly encouraged in the PhD proposal.

Scholarship value:

The scholarship provides a maximum of 3 years of support.

  • Stipend Year 1: $40,000
  • Stipend Year 2: $40,700
  • Stipend Year 3: $41,400

The duration of the scholarship will be reduced by any periods of study undertaken towards the nominated degree before the commencement of the funding period.

Co-funding with the NHMRC

Applicants applying for NHMRC Postgraduate Scholarship funding are eligible to apply for the Heart Foundation's PhD Scholarship. If the applicant is successful in both funding schemes, they have the option of accepting the NHMRC funding and a top-up salary funding from the Heart Foundation. Top-up funding amounts is relative to the NHMRC funding amount.

Applications must be submitted via the Heart Foundation's Researcher Portal (New applicants will need to register for an account before proceeding).  

Application deadlines

  • 9 June 2023 – Applications open
  • INTERNAL DEADLINE - 7 July 2023 – University review deadline
    All applications must be completed and submitted by this deadline to allow for completion of University endorsement. Any applications submitted between 8 July 2023 and 13 July 2023 will be endorsed without review.
  • EXTERNAL DEADLINE - 14 July 2023 – Applications close
    All applications must be submitted to the Heart Foundation by this date. No late submissions can be accepted.
  • Approx. October 2023– Successful applicants notified.
