The Student Affairs Division brings together central units with the objective of enhancing student experience and success. It has two operational arms:  the Student Services Directorate, and the UQ Student Employability Directorate.  The Division also manages the University’s day-to-day relationship with UQU , student accommodation providers, and works with UQ Health Care to ensure medical service provision for students.

The Student Services Directorate provides a range of services, activities and initiatives and support functions that enhance the student experience and assist in ensuring student success.

The current initiatives led by the Student Services teams fall into a number of areas:

  • Advice Teams | The focus is on enabling student success through providing general and specialist support including accommodation, disability, diversity and inclusion, general welfare and international student advice.
  • Learning Development Team | The focus is on supporting student success through online, group and one to one initiatives to enhance academic and learning skills for students.
  • Counselling Team | The focus is on providing an opportunity for enrolled students to access professional counselling so that they may better develop and fulfil their personal, academic and professional potential.
  • Student Experience Team | The focus is on delivering projects that help students make connections and partnerships that enhance their experience at UQ.  The work of this team will provide opportunities for students to build a sense of belonging and support within UQ.

About This Opportunity

As Student Counsellor, the primary focus of your role is to support the mental health and well-being of students at UQ. Leveraging from your relevant experience, you will be tasked with identifying and conducting appropriate counselling interventions and educational programmes at both the individual and group level.

Your expertise will be called upon to provide proven and effective short to medium-term assistance and interventions that support students in their transition into student life, through to their graduation. Through your counselling role you will support students to feel engaged throughout the student lifecycle, while also referring to appropriate additional services as appropriate.

You will be required to liaise with other University staff on matters related to student well-being and may be required to make referrals to community, medical or other providers to support the care of our students.  In line with the UQ Mental Health Strategy, the role of the Counselling Team will be in delivering and developing preventative, large scale initiatives that focus on high levels of student engagement that will address some of the common issues that students deal with at university.

This position is mainly located at our picturesque St Lucia campus , renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. You may be required to work at other locations where services to UQ students are provided.  


Our Ideal Candidate

As the successful candidate, your relevant qualifications and experience in a similar role will provide you with the ability to deliver outcome-focussed, short term counselling services to UQ students.  The role also has the opportunity to join the team working to support and prevent sexual misconduct and previous work in this area is desirable.

Your understanding of a wide array of psychological and developmental theories/ practice will ensure you have an evidenced based approach to deliver bespoke student designs related to mental health and well-being.

Your expertise in interacting with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds will ensure that you are an excellent fit as Student Counsellor.

What We Can Offer

We currently have several opportunities at HEW Level 7.

The vacancies available include:

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $85,222 - $93,085 plus super of up to 9.5%. The total FTE package will be in the range $93,318 - $101,929.
