Working as part of Student Services, the primary purpose of the Student Adviser role is to be the first and primary point of contact for enquiries for current and prospective students and visitors to the University.

The position provides student support and course advice, information and administration services within the scope of the Student Service Network, maximising first point resolution and a case management approach for complex queries.

The Student Adviser is required to maintain up-to-date knowledge across a variety of student areas, support mechanisms and areas of student experience lifecycle as well as developing and maintaining a level of expertise within a cohort/discipline area.

Please note, this position requires the successful candidate to work on-site at Deakin’s Geelong Waterfront Campus.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Be the primary student-facing contact for enquiries through the student central hubs - via email, phone, face to face or webchat on a rotational basis and represent the University accordingly when dealing with all enquiries from visitors, prospective and current students.
  • Provide advice to students on a wide range of university processes and procedures relating to courses, admissions, enrolments, fees, scholarships, assessments, examinations, graduations and government requirements for domestic and international students, peer support programs, financial and student support mechanisms.
  • Provide advice and assistance/referral to the specialist and support services to support the health and well-being of students.
  • Provide technical support to students using systems such as StudentConnect, DeakinSync, the Deakin Applicant Portal, STAR (student timetable system), and resolves queries such as IT access and password enquiries, result release.
  • Assist with, and participate in, Student Service Network initiatives and projects, and resourcing of orientation and Open Day activities.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with specialist service providers across the Student Service Network.
  • Focus of the role will vary dependent on the individual’s expertise, but key duties will include some or all of the following:    

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Excellent customer service skills demonstrating an exceptional phone manner and a positive attitude.
  • Highly developed communication skills, with an ability to be clear and concise in the dissemination of information and advice.
  • Capacity to quickly develop knowledge and understanding of the University’s structure, its operations and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of information technology software packages.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to show initiative. Proven ability to deal with difficult customers and to be able to work effectively with a variety of people and have an understanding of, and empathy for, the needs of customers at all levels and across all cultures.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated commitment to teamwork and the maintenance of a supportive work environment.
  • Ability to effectively operate as a member of a multi campus customer service team.

  • A requirement to accommodate a flexible work schedule as some activities are held outside normal office hours. Due to the requirement to maintain normal business and support services, annual leave may not be approved during certain times of the year.

  • There may be times where the role is required to work in a different student hub, as needed.
