School of Nursing and Midwifery PhD Scholarship Developing the Future Nurse through Quality Clinical Experiences

In a 2020 survey of 1,263 nursing students across Australia placements were generally positively rated using the 19 item Placement Evaluation Tool (PET).  However, a range of significant concerns were also raised with regard to educational and clinical quality.

The PhD Scholar will focus on key aspects of the work integrated learning experience to prepare the future nursing workforce and may focus this work in a specialist area such as aged care, mental health, etc.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to collaborate with Council of Deans of Nursing and Midwifery (Australia and New Zealand) (CDNM), working with National Placement Evaluation Centre. The Centre will collate placement ratings from students and educators using a range of measures, enabling national benchmarking, in depth research and quality improvements.

Eligibility guidelines
  • Registered nurse who has completed Honours or Master by Research.

Preference will be given to ‘on campus’ students, however international students unable to travel to Australia due to the current travel restrictions, study will be supported remotely until travel to Western Australia is permitted.


Desired skills

Full research training will be provided however, knowledge and/or experience of qualitative research methods, survey methodology and experience with statistical analysis and related software (e.g., Stata, SAS, R, SPSS) would be advantageous.
