The Role:

The Proposal and Grant Writer positions will sit within the Alfred Deakin Institute, with the successful candidates being hired on a consultancy basis (ABN required). 

To be successful, you'll have:

  • Extensive experience developing successful funding proposals/grants, especially for institutional donors such as USAID, FCDO, DFAT and the UN. Experience writing proposals for foundations and private sector donors will also be useful.
  • Experience working in humanities, social sciences or academic research-related roles.
  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least four years’ relevant grant-writing experience, or master’s degree plus at least two years’ relevant professional experience. PhD candidates are welcome to apply, particularly those studying degrees in philosophy, history, cultural heritage and museum studies, anthropology, criminology, political science, sociology, communication and media studies, religion and religious studies.
  • Flexible hours available, but funding opportunities often arise with short notice (2–6 weeks) and require sharp, short bursts of work under pressure.
  • An Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • Candidates must demonstrate high levels of creative thinking, flexibility, and willingness to learn. A commitment to high-performing teamwork is essential to success.
  • Ability to work remotely in a multicultural team.
  • Excellent fluency in written English is required. Preferred candidates will demonstrate an ability to write quickly, creatively, and succinctly.
  • A strong resonance with ADI’s mission to: (1) understand complex social issues associated with globalising processes through innovative, mixed-method multidisciplinary research and (2) be an internationally-leading social sciences and humanities institute whose high-impact knowledge creation and dissemination actively shapes agendas and informs debates to meaningfully affect lived human experiences.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Liaise with and coordinate ADI team members to organise and project manage full proposals, concept notes and EOIs for a range of funding opportunities from design to submission.
  • Contribute to the drafting/writing of proposals with high levels of professionalism and clear language and with sufficient level of detail as required by the funding body, managing multiple drafts and iterations.
  • Assist in identifying and researching relevant funding opportunities.
