The Sexual Health Unit, in the Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, is seeking a talented student to undertake a mixed methods PhD focusing on the development and evaluation of a model of care to strengthen chlamydia case management in general practice.
The Centre has one scholarship for an appropriately qualified student to commence research in 2019 or early 2020.
This PhD opportunity arises from the Management of Chlamydia Cases in Australia (MoCCA) study. MoCCA is a five-year National Health and Medical Research Council Partnership Project which aims to reduce chlamydia-associated reproductive health complications by strengthening case management in the general practice setting. MoCCA is being conducted in close collaboration with project partners including state Health Departments, sexual health and family planning organisations and Primary Health Networks. It is intended that the program of work be embedded within MoCCA, with specific areas for exploration negotiated with project staff/supervisors. Potential topic areas include:
- An evaluation of the acceptability and usability of the chlamydia management model of care in general practice. This would involve qualitative and quantitative methods including interviews with key stakeholders, a pre and post evaluation of chlamydia case management practices, and analyses of survey data collected from health professionals working in general practice.
- Development and evaluation of strategies for improving care and management of sex partners of those who test positive for chlamydia, including the acceptability and feasibility of these strategies. Strategies for partner management include patient-delivered partner therapy (PDPT ), partner notification and re-testing. This would involve both quantitative (e.g. surveys) and qualitative (e.g. interviews) data collection with both health professionals and consumers.
- A combination of the above, or other areas of the project deemed suitable for a PhD program of work.
This PhD will require close collaboration with MoCCA staff and project partners and may require travel and field visits to general practices in metropolitan and rural areas of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
You will have successfully obtained an Honours or Masters Degree (or equivalent) and you will need to be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident. The project will suit candidates with undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in public health, epidemiology, nursing, medicine or other areas of health, and/or work experience in public health, sexual and reproductive health, evaluation or primary care.
