The Opportunity

Expressions of interest are sought from outstanding candidates for PhD study in Chemical and Biological Engineering.

We have a scholarship available for a suitably qualified PhD student at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Monash University to study new materials composed of cellulose and bioplastics that improve the functional characteristics of their components. Furthermore, the candidate will apply sustainable methods to generate new materials using low energy and green chemistry approaches.

We envisage that the candidate will make extensive use of cellulose processing and analytical and functional testing methods to prepare and characterise the new materials. The candidate will work in a world-class technology-based research, development and training environment enabling sustainable innovation for a competitive Australian bio-manufacturing industry.

The candidate will undertake a research project to fulfil requirements for a PhD, including publishing journal articles and work alongside industry partners that developing applications and markets for fully biodegradable plastics in Australia.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have graduated from a 4 year degree in a suitable discipline achieving H1 equivalent or upper 2 combined with relevant experience
  • Fulfil Monash University’s postgraduate entry requirements .

Applicants must show excellent communication and inter-personal skills, and the ability to conduct self-motivated research. They should have research-based Honours or Masters Degree (or equivalent) in the relevant research areas.

Note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed over zoom if needed. The interviews will be conducted in English.
