About the Role

The Aerostructures Innovation Research Hub (AIRHub) will be a world-class, collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology, CSIRO, industry and research partners. AIRHub has been designed with industry and research leaders at the forefront of Australia’s Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing industries to reinforce the Australia’s pre-eminent position in advanced composites manufacturing for civil aerospace projects and accelerate development of composites manufacturing for integrated structures and airframes in eVTOL urban passenger, cargo and aeromedical air vehicles.

Commercial state of the art manufacturing of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) relies on low rate or niche production techniques that do not scale or meet future certification requirements. In the future, UAVs are expected to become commonplace with huge numbers of aircraft to be produced each year and recent updates on guidelines and certifications will require higher quality, traceability and process control. With this demand in mind, industry needs to understand different manufacturing processes and materials to be able to manufacture these high volume, high quality and low-cost aerospace structures.

This project aims to utilise the advanced manufacturing and testing facilities of the Swinburne-CSIRO Industry 4.0 Testlab for composite manufacturing of complex structures and develop an understanding in aerostructure cutting edge part production for UAV’s. As a PhD student within the AIR Hub, you will be working as part of an exciting team of Master, PhD students and experienced engineers on real life aerospace problems due to a great industry partner network. You will also have an allocated project budget for consumables and a travel budget for conferences.

About You

To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

• Composite manufacturing techniques and processing technologies
• Communicating effectively with peers, industry partners and suppliers to achieve collaborative outcomes, including in cross-functional teams
• Working both independently and as part of a team in a collaborative manner
• Being enthusiastic, self-motivated with a demonstrable aptitude for research and development.

Qualifications

A 4 year Bachelor/Honours degree or a coursework Masters degree with a minimum average of 70% in the final year of study (H1 or H2A) or a Research Masters in Material Science, Chemistry, Mechanical/ Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
