Remuneration: The successful applicant will receive a Research Living Allowance, at current value of $29,500AUD per annum 2021 full-time rate (tax-free stipend), indexed plus allowances as per RTP stipend scholarship conditions at: www.monash.edu/graduate-research/future-students/scholarships/scholarship-policy-and-procedures . A tuition fee scholarship and Single Overseas Health Cover (OSHC) will be provided for a successful international awardee.

The Opportunity

These PhD scholarships are funded as part of a Victorian Government program of research led by the Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Centre (MGFVPC). The MGFVPC is at the forefront of research and education aimed at preventing domestic and family violence. The Centre is contributing to transformative social change aimed at ending all form of domestic and family violence by providing an evidence base for policy change i) to better support and protect those experiencing family violence; and ii) address the cultural and economic drivers that underpin it.

The successful applicants will join the MGFVPC and contribute to the Centre’s program of research while also undertaking their own distinct PhD projects. The PhD projects should be focused in the area of gender, domestic and family violence. Proposals focused on the following research areas are encouraged:

  • First Nations individuals, families and communities,
  • LGBTIQ+ communities,
  • Perpetrator interventions,
  • Children and young people,
  • Quantitative research methods, 
  • Intimate partner femicide,
  • Migrant and refugee experiences of domestic and family violence,
  • Gender equality, violence against women and the workplace, and
  • Primary prevention.

Proposals in other areas will also be considered. 

The successful candidates will be integrated into the Centre’s leading research program, and will have access to funding to support fieldwork, transcription, travel, and conference attendance. The candidates will benefit from expert supervision from research leaders in domestic and family violence, policy and practice reform, primary prevention and gender equality.

Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will have an excellent academic track record in a social science discipline. Competence in qualitative and/or quantitative research methods is sought.

In its assessment, the selection committee will prioritise applicants who hold an Australian (or equivalent international) Honour’s or Master’s degree (both in a relevant field), with a significant research component and with first-class honours/H1 awarded. Applications from First Nations Scholars are strongly encouraged.

Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus. Please note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

The successful applicant will be expected to enrol by 15 October 2021. However, there may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement.

  • A brief research proposal not exceeding 750 words in length that states the broad project aims, and demonstrates some understanding of the area of research,
