Development of auxetic structures for optimal orthopaedic implant / bone integration
3 Minute read
This PhD project will be based at the University of Melbourne with a 12-month stay at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. View the SJTU-based project .
Stress shielding is the main biomechanical factor leading to aseptic loosening of the femoral stem following total hip arthroplasty (THA). This project aims to design a femoral stem incorporating novel auxetic structures to expand the femoral stem while in tensile loading, thus to increase the load transferred to the femur and avoid stress shielding induced bone resorption and aseptic loosening of the implant.
Project goals
The objective of this project is:
- To optimise auxetic structures to match with the patient’s bone and provide optimal performance with long-term stability and compatibility.
