PhD position: A/Prof Duncan Galloway

Updated: 1 day ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

My primary areas of research activity are twofold:first, studing thermonuclear (X-ray) bursts from accreting neutron stars;and second, searches for optical counterparts of gravitational-wave eventswith the GOTO telescope network.Projects focussing on thermonuclear bursts will involve analysis of newand archival data from satellite-based X-ray telescopes, and runningnumerical models to provide constraints on the source properties(including neutron star mass and radius). Collaborative opportunities areavailable via project partners in the Netherlands, Denmark, and USA.

The GOTO telescope networkwill from 2023 onwards incorporate a southern node at Siding SpringObservatory, near Coonabarabran. Gravitational-wave triggers are thepriority sources, but the instrument has broad capabilities for othertypes of transients including gamma-ray bursts and supernovae.Collaborative opportunities can be arranged with project partners in theUK, Thailand and Finland.
