PhD Opportunity: In-field Surgical Scanner Pod Design
Job no.: 636557
Faculty/Portfolio: Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture (MADA)
Location: Caulfield campus
Employment Type: Full-time
Duration: 3 - 3.5-year fixed-term appointment
Remuneration: The successful applicant will receive a tax-free living allowance of $50,000 per annum
Are you an innovative designer looking for an opportunity to make a difference to the health and lives of people?
Monash Design Health Collab is working with Micro-X on a new research project that will result in the design of a deployable surgical pod for the Australian armed forces and we are looking for the right PhD candidate to help us realise this project.
We’re offering the opportunity to work on an embedded practice PhD as part of an energetic and innovative team and under the guidance of industry and academic experts. The successful candidate will receive a fully funded scholarship of $50,000 per annum for the duration of the entire project (3-3.5 years).
About the project
This project will involve research over 3-3.5 years into the design of a deployable surgical pod for the Australian armed services.
The pod will feature an integrated full body carbon-nanotube (CNT) x-ray CT scanner, which will inform battlefield (or disaster relief) medical responders of the patient’s exact injury profile, allowing them to treat more quickly and effectively.
The research and real world impact will be made possible thanks to Micro-X’s Electronic X-Ray tube technology , which relies on a world-first CNT electron emitter. The life-saving potential of this technology is currently being proven in an adjacent research program developing an ambulance based brain CT scanner for early stroke detection, a project undertaken by our Design Health Collab.
While doing your PhD with us, you’ll have the advantage of working alongside and receiving support from researchers in the Monash Design Health Collab, along with Micro-X staff who are constantly looking at things differently and who believe in the power of great ideas.
In turn, you’ll uncover design outcomes that are of high translational value. You’ll have an opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the field and to develop workflow, usability and device designs. While working directly on the focused topic, you’ll also be able to learn about how we are creating future x-ray imaging opportunities for other industries across the world.
About Design Health Collab
Practice-based design research at the Design Health Collab is framed in terms of practice-led enquiry. You’ll be expected to engage with some traditional research methods such as a literature review and will drive the work through design studio methods such as ethnographic research, and design processes including empathy interviews, field observations, sketching, visualising, CAD and prototype making etc.
At Design Health Collab, we use a people-centred design approach to understand and activate significant, high-impact healthcare services and products in the world. Our research takes place at the centre of the complex ecosystem of health services. We are part of a thriving ecosystem of research in Monash Art, Design and Architecture (MADA).
