  • The project provides an exciting opportunity to work on an industry project to understand the skills and capability requirements for the future energy workforce relating to digital innovations.
  • The success of integrated data systems will hinge on the ability of the energy sector’s workforce to use these technologies effectively, and it is increasingly coming into focus that the industry’s workers have very uneven levels of proficiency in digital skills.
  • To provide this important foundation for the coordination of energy supply networks across government, industry, and community groups will require as a foundation the assessment of several key digital competencies—specifically including data engineering, data science, wireless sensors and networks required for the internet of things, cloud computing, automation and robotics, and cyber security.
  • The research project will identify the competencies that Australia’s energy industry will require to effectively leverage the digital technologies be required to coordinate across government, industry, and community stakeholders.  From experienced personnel to recent graduates and across the relevant technical disciplines, it will offer a competence framework that these constituents can use to identify skill gaps and, onward from diagnosing where gaps may be, recommend what specific steps can be taken to fill them.

Key requirements

The successful applicant must:

Candidates may be enrolled off-campus, where this is stipulated in the agreement with the supervisors.


Desirable requirements

Highly motivated PhD candidate who has:

  • a bachelor’s degree with honours or master’s degree in a relevant field or industry equivalent;
  • demonstrated strong background in a related discipline;
  • excellent research, analytical and writing skills; and
  • perseverance, independent and deadline-driven abilities, with a comprehensive oversight capability.

Terms and Conditions

Scholarships will be awarded to candidates for up to 3.5 years as per this Industry Engagement PhD Scholarship Scheme.
