Remuneration: Stipend can range from $29,000 p.a. full-time rate (2020 rate, pro-rata) and tax-free

Two stipend scholarships are available for PhD studies commencing late 2020 or early 2021. The scholarships will provide support for three years on a full-time basis for a research project leading to a PhD. Engineering Tuition Fee Scholarship for the duration of stipend scholarship for international students will be available. Please note that Engineering Tuition Fee Scholarship will be assessed and awarded on a case by case basis. Both projects involve heavy interaction with industry.

The student will be provided with an annual scholarship in line with the current stipend in place for high degree research students, with the possibility of a top-up depending on academic standing and/or experience. The potential for further earning is also possible through tutoring.

The Opportunities

Project 1: This project focusses on contaminant transport through lining systems. Particular emphasis will be given to chemical compatibility issues between a suite of emerging contaminants (PFASs, etc.) and soil and geosynthetic liners. This project involves both experimental and analytical works. It is part of a partnership with the University of Sydney, Deakin University, Queen’s University, Canada, and numerous national and international industry partners. The project aims at providing practitioners with better tools to estimate the design life of hydraulic barriers systems.

Project 2: This project focusses on the fate of microplastics in landfill leachates and their interaction with drainage layers. Particular emphasis will be given to their distribution in landfill leachates, their ability to absorb contaminants such as PFAS and hydrocarbons and to act as drivers to further contamination, and their mobility in drainage layers and beyond. This project involves both experimental and analytical/modelling works and close interaction with the industry to ensure a quick uptake of the outcomes of the project.

Qualification requirements

Applicants should have an Honours 1 or First Class Honours Degree in Engineering or Science, an interest in analytical/numerical and experimental research, and be highly motivated to make a positive impact on the protection of the environment through their work.
