This scholarship will support research projects undertaken at Griffith Law School. Our research is characterised by interdisciplinarity and a commitment to social justice. We have a vibrant and high performing research culture in which HDR candidates are strongly encouraged to engage throughout their candidature.

The successful applicant will be based at either the Gold Coast or Nathan campus.


The selection of applicants for the award of higher degree research scholarships at Griffith University involves consideration of your academic merit and research background. To be successful within this role, you will be able to undertake independent and high-quality research on law, legal systems, and legal institutions. You will have evidence of a passion for social justice.

  • Applications are welcome from domestic and international applicants. The scholarship is only available to those who enrol as a PhD candidate onshore/on campus.
  • Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete, a Bachelors degree with Honours equivalent to first class honours or a Masters degree (AQF Level 9) incorporating a significant research component of a standard comparable to a Bachelors Honours degree or be regarded by Griffith University as having an equivalent level of attainment in accordance with Schedule One of the HDR Scholarship Policy .   • The top-up scholarship may be awarded to an applicant who is successful in the University’s scholarship round and who is offered a Postgraduate Research Scholarship through this process – applicants are encouraged to outline their research experience and background when applying.

The total annual value of this scholarship is $48,854 and consists of a top-up scholarship funded by the Law School valued at $20,000 per annum and a Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship.

The 2022 Griffith University Postgraduate Research Scholarship has an annual stipend of $28,854 (indexed) for a period of up to three years of full-time study. Please see the GUPRS Conditions of Award for more information.

A successful international applicant will also be awarded a Griffith University International Postgraduate Research Scholarship to cover tuition fees for up to three years. Please see the GUIPRS Conditions of Award for more information.

The  Law School reserves the right to not award the top up scholarship if a suitable applicant is not identified.

All applications for this top-up scholarship should apply through the University’s PhD application process . Applicants are encouraged to contact the Law School’s HDR Convenor, Associate Professor Malcolm Smith, as early as possible before the application deadline, for help with navigating this process. The application process requires, before the closing date, that you:

  • Check the Admission and English Language Proficiency requirements to find out if you are academically qualified to apply for this program.
  • Develop a proposed research topic and research proposal in your area of interest, that falls within an area of expertise that can be supervised by staff at the Griffith Law School.
  • Identify at least one potential Griffith University supervisor who has reviewed your research proposal and has agreed to supervise you.
  • Develop a curriculum vitae (CV).
  • Identify two academic referees who are willing to act as referees on your behalf .

6 September 2022: International offshore scholarship applications

20 September 2022: Domestic and International onshore scholarship applications
