Industry PhD Scholarship - Sustainable Infrastructure Systems Pty Ltd

Updated: 10 months ago
Location: Adelaide, SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Deadline: 31 May 2023

Sustainable Infrastructure Systems Pty Ltd and the University of Adelaide invite applications for a groundbreaking PhD research project in the School of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

Project Title: Development of a sustainable large span hybrid FRP-steel flat panel system

Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have gained popularity in the civil engineering domain due to their superior mechanical properties such as high strength-to-weight ratios, non-corrosivity and durability. Sustainable Infrastructure Systems Pty Ltd currently manufactures full InfraCore® FRP bridge panels with spans and fixed camber determined by short- and long-term creep. In order to achieve long spans with no camber, structural enhancements to the FRP bridge panels are required.

This project aims to develop, via experimentation and finite element modelling, an innovative large span hybrid FRP-steel flat panel system by (i) incorporating internal structural stiffening systems, (ii) replacing the non-structural foam core, and (iii) addition of a canopy.

The successful candidate will work between the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace Campus and the Sustainable Infrastructure Systems manufacturing facility in Adelaide, S.A.

Funding: The successful candidate will receive a University of Adelaide Research Scholarship (UARS) or Research Training Program Scholarship (RTPS) for 3.75 years, comprising a stipend (indexed annually), overseas student health cover (OSHC) allowance (for international students), relocation allowance (if applicable), and allowance to support a 3-month Research Internship. The stipend rate in 2023 is AUD$32,500.

Eligibility: The project is open to either domestic or international candidates, subject to the standard entry requirements for a PhD at the University of Adelaide.
