About this scholarship

We are searching for an outstanding research student based at Curtin University to undertake an industry-based, fully-funded MPhil degree focusing on researching value creation from the development of new machine learning applications within the agricultural technologies domain. The research student will design and conduct in-depth research into the exploration of consumer demands and value chain benefits of traceability in the WA pig industry for achieving market differentiation and competitive advantage in key global markets.

This is a high-profile, industry-based, research collaboration concerned with developing scalable digital solutions for the agricultural industry to support data-driven decision making and enhance day to day livestock management for positive animal welfare outcomes. The selected student will be afforded the opportunity to engage with multiple key stakeholders including Beanstalk Agtech , Xsights , the Food Agility CRC , DPIRD and the Craig Mostyn Group to utilise research to drive the development of high-impact supply chain technologies which solve significant real world problems through the lens of academic frameworks. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated research student with a passion for agri-food marketing and supply chain management to engage with the application of research that utilises their expertise to support the creation of transformative digital solutions whilst also providing significant contributions to the broader research community.

Requirements (highly desirable):

  • An academic and/or industry background in the agri-food sector is preferred, but not essential
  • Experience/knowledge in marketing or supply chain theories, research design and methodologies.
  • A passion for learning and applying quantitative techniques (e.g. cluster analysis, factor analysis, conjoint analysis) to identify the value proposition of traceability and welfare attributes for the Craig Mostyn Group across its supply chain with consumer preferences in mind.
  • Ability to engage with multiple stakeholders and collaborate effectively within a broader multidisciplinary team.
  • Proactive, accountable, and ability to understand and work towards broader commercial outcomes and imperatives in a reporting-intensive environment.
  • Proven track record of high-quality academic writing.

Scope of research work and outputs

  • Two years of full-time study to:
  • Conduct a systematic literature review of consumer preferences for livestock health and welfare provenance traceability in meat products
  • Design consumer preference experiments to test hypotheses of the research
  • Collect and analyse data to advise the Craig Mostyn Group about value creation attributes of traceability technology across people, process and technology
    • Peer-reviewed publications in high quality journals and the ability to present work at academic and industry conferences.
    • There are considerable career-development opportunities for industry-based internships throughout the student’s candidature.
