About this scholarship

The students will work in a project that proposes a new cementation technology that has the potential to massively reduce CO2 emission from construction. By emulating nature’s way of building edifices such as corals, stromatolites, and beach rocks, a bio-inspired cementation technology will be developed. A novel bio-sintering process is proposed through successive dissolution and remineralization of limestone utilizing the microbes that create the natural edifices. We shall isolate microbes that have evolved in natural sites where dissolution and re-deposition phenomena are observed. First, we shall demonstrate the phenomena separately. We shall combine the processes to demonstrate bio-sintering. A pilot scale setup will be developed to develop the design parameters for bio-sintering in specific applications.

This scholarship provides a living stipend of $35,000.00 p.a. pro rata indexed, based on full-time studies, for up to a maximum of 3 years. An extension of up to six months may be awarded provided the student meets eligibility guidelines as per the conditions of award.

Scholarship Details


Two candidates will work in a cross-disciplinary team consisting of academics, researchers and industry representatives. Candidate 1 must have a first-class Honours degree, Master’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Geotechnology, Geology or related fields. Candidate 2 must have a first-class Honours degree, Master’s degree or equivalent in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Geochemistry, or related fields. Experience of publications in good quality journals is desirable. The applicants must meet the academic entry requirement for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy program including the English proficiency levels set by Curtin University.

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must complete their milestone 1 within 6 month of enrolment and a milestone every year hence and remain enrolled on a full-time basis for the duration of the scholarship.
