Assist in the development of a wetland management strategy for south-east South Australia by understanding and predicting the response of waterbirds to the management of South Australia's wetland network

This exciting role is funded through the Healthy Coorong, Healthy Basin project, and involves collaboration between The University of Adelaide, the Goyder Institute for Water Research, and the Department for Environment and Water. The successful candidate will work within a team from the School of Biological Sciences to understand and predict the response of waterbirds to the management of South Australia’s wetland network. This project will inform the development of a wetland management strategy for south-east South Australia that seeks to maintain suitable habitat for different waterbird functional groups, under different scenarios of environmental conditions and water availability. In this role you will use historical datasets to understand the response of different waterbird species to wetland condition, work with state-government agencies to identify feasible wetland-management scenarios, and  model the capacity of different adaptive management strategies to maintain or improve waterbird abundance and diversity in the landscape.

To be successful you will need:

• Experience with Geographic Information Systems and scripting languages (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, R).
• Experience with the presentation and modelling of spatial ecological data.
• Ability to document workflows so that methods are traceable and research can be reproduced.
• Ability to follow standard data management protocols.
• Basic understanding of waterbird ecology.
