(Level A) $75,888- $102,040 per annum per annum plus an employer contribution of 17%

Fixed term position - Part-time (0.5 FTE) for 24 months

This grant funded research assistant position is within an internationally well-known research group on the biomechanics of cardiovascular systems; you will be working as a part of this group.

One in five patients will have a second heart attack within five years of their first. We must become better at targeting those at risk with advanced treatments. This project will shed light on how novel biomechanical forces, evaluated using our personalised simulation capability, may drive plaque growth or destabilisation and how this will help us predict secondary heart attacks.

The project is mainly about Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) simulations of coronary arteries re-constructed from MRI, IVUS, and OCT clinical images. Skills required are the finite element method, the fluid-structure interaction method, re-construction of cardiovascular system from OCT, IVUS, and MRI clinical images.

The final aim of this project is to prevent heart attack. We hope to develop targeted, more personalised approaches to better predict plaque growth and hence secondary heart attacks, which will potentially be lifesaving for many patients.

To be successful you will need:

  • A PhD in biomechanical or mechanical engineering (those who are close to graduation are also encouraged to apply)
  • Strong track record of publications
  • Demonstrated experience in finite element modelling of biomechanical or mechanical systems
  • Strong team work skills and commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Demonstrated experience in three-dimension re-construction of biomechanical systems for numerical simulations
