The House Call Doctor Futures in Health Indigenous Scholarship

The House Call Doctor Futures in Health Indigenous Scholarship recognises the immense contributions of Indigenous Australians throughout all sectors of society. However, the scholarship also acknowledges that Indigenous health professionals remain too few, numbering an estimated 0.3% of the national healthcare workforce.

Our team of home doctors in Brisbane and Queensland wide believe that healthcare professionals should reflect the diversity of patients they care for. Healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds offer unique perspectives that enable the medical workforce to be more understanding and responsive to patient needs, both on an individual and community level.

Dr Mark Wenitong, founder of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association and a member of the Kabi Kabi tribal group, said that Indigenous Australians have a vital role to play in our national healthcare workforce.

“The Australian healthcare system works very well for the majority of Australians. However, there is great discrepancy in health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of this country. For Indigenous Australians, there are significant barriers in accessing medical professionals who can communicate effectively and understand cultural approaches to healthcare,” Dr Wenitong said.

Dr Wenitong also said that medicine can offer a highly rewarding career that opens the door to professional success and personal fulfillment for Indigenous students today.

“Encouraging more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to pursue a career in medicine, and supporting them to study and succeed, should be a major focus for our nation’s health workforce,” he said. “I would encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to apply for the Futures in Health Indigenous Scholarship, along with other programs like it, and aim to make a difference in your own life along with that of your community.”

6pm to 8am (due to new government regulations our call centre now doesn’t open until 6pm)

Sunday & public holidays
24 hours (call centre open 24 hours)

We bulk bill all Medicare and DVA card holders and we also accept ALLIANZ, BUPA, & NIB insurances for overseas students. We have been approved by the The Department of Health as a provider in the Medical Deputising Service Program.
