Flinders University and the Commission for Excellence and Innovation in Health in South Australia are offering a PhD Enterprise Scholarship to undertake research on economic frameworks to promote innovation in local health service settings. Local health services are often too busy surviving to thrive and insufficient capacity is available to develop and implement processes to promote innovation. The research will investigate incentives and supports relating to the prioritisation, development, assessment and implementation of health service innovations in local health service settings, engaging with clinicians, consumers and health service managers.

The PhD will be co-supervised by Professor of Health Economics, Jonathan Karnon and the Commissioner for Excellence and Innovation and Professor of Cardiology, Derek Chew

This inspiring project involves:

  • Engagement with clinicians, consumers and health system managers to define options for incentivising and supporting health service innovations
  • Implementation and evaluation of incentives to promote clinician and consumer involvement in health service innovation
  • Case study projects working with clinicians and consumers to develop and evaluate health service innovations, including quantitative analysis of health systems data

The PhD Enterprise Scholarship also includes an internship of at least 60 full-time equivalent days, agreed to in written form within 18 months of candidature, undertaken and completed prior to completion of the PhD, during which you will be embedded with the industry partner team, developing your network, and gaining insight into the everyday research practices of an industry-leading/service driven organisation.
