Purpose

The Playford Trust, in partnership with Codan, offers a $10,000 scholarship for a student commencing Honours or fourth year engineering in the fields of software, electronics, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, physics, mathematics, or signal processing.

Codan uses technology to solve communications, safety, security and productivity problems in the harshest environments on earth. With its head office in Adelaide, South Australia, the company has expanded to have a truly global footprint, with offices in the US, Canada, Ireland, UAE and Latin America. Codan’s customers include some of the world’s largest and best aid and humanitarian organisations, mining companies, security and military groups and governments. Its products are sold in more than 150 countries, with exports representing approximately 85% of revenue.

The successful applicant for this scholarship will have the opportunity to undertake work experience at Codan. The aim is to help the student develop skills and knowledge and enhance their industry experience. They will work on projects in a collaborative environment, actively contributing and drawing on the experience of others. The type of work to be undertaken – and level of commitment – will be negotiated between the successful student and the company.

Selection Criteria

The Trust will consider nominations from students studying at one of the three South Australian universities, and reserves the right to accept or reject any or all of the nominations.

Codan and the Playford Trust will jointly make the final selection.

Applicants must be:

  • ready to commence Honours or fourth year engineering in software, electronics, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics, physics, mathematics, or signal processing, at one of South Australia’s three universities

  • intending to spend a significant part of their career in South Australia, or be likely to provide a benefit to the State

Preference will be given to students who are innovative and collaborative and share the values that drive Codan’s culture of excellence – can-do; high performing; customer driven; openness and integrity.

It is essential that the applicant’s supervisor or an academic referee (e.g. dean of school/faculty, or lecturer) provides a supporting comment about the student’s achievements, character and leadership potential.
