What is this Scholarship Scheme?

Macquarie University (MQ) in partnership with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) will jointly offer a number of postgraduate research scholarships for Chinese higher-degree research candidates. Successful candidates may commence their PhD at Macquarie University from 2023.

Macquarie welcomes international candidates to join us in undertaking research in various disciplines.

Macquarie University is promoting joint MQ-CSC scholarship applications for PhDs at MQ in the following disciplines:

  • Creative Arts, Communication and Culture
  • Chemical and Biomolecular Science

If a candidate has a conditional MQ offer of enrolment subject to the CSC award, and the CSC award is not granted, the candidate may still enrol at MQ but will be required to pay for all costs, including tuition fees and cost of living.

Scholarship Components

Successful PhD candidates will receive:

  • iMQRES Tuition fee offset for 3 years maximum
  • Co-funded stipend (living allowance) for 3 years maximum at $32,000 per annum fixed rate.

How to Apply
  • New applicants will need to apply to Macquarie University for admission and scholarship. For details on how to submit an application please visit the HDR How to Apply website.
  • When applying via the online Applicant Portal, ensure you select the course you wish to apply for and the MQCSC - Macquarie University - China Scholarship Council (CSC) Scholarship.
  • Applications will be assessed by Macquarie University. If you are successful, Macquarie University will provide a provisional offer letter. You will need this letter to apply to the China Scholarship Council
  • Macquarie University will then provide the China Scholarship Council with a ranked list of suitable candidates to be considered for the scholarship and the program they have received the provisional offer for.
  • The China Scholarship Council will evaluate applications according to their requirements and priorities and will provide Macquarie University with a shortlist of potential scholarship recipients. The China Scholarship Council will announce the final list of scholarship recipients and send China Scholarship Council award letters to successful applicants.
  • Selected candidates will then be contacted by Macquarie University and candidates will need to provide the official China Scholarship Council award letter to Macquarie University.
  • Application timeline:

    • Applications are to be submitted to Macquarie University no later than 5 February 2023.
    • Macquarie University provisional offers to be issued between 15 - 30 March 2023.
    • The CSC application closing dates range from 10 – 31 March 2023. Please refer to CSC official website to check the programs’ details and eligibility. The application can be lodged via CSC online applicant portal .
    • April - May 2023: CSC will evaluate the applications.
    • June 2023: Successful applicants will be expected to enrol and start their PhD study at MQ in October 2023 or February 2024.
