Australia’s international development assistance in the Philippines helps promote prosperity, reduce poverty, and enhance political stability. 

Australia Awards are prestigious international awards offered by the Australian Government to the next generation of global leaders for development. Through study and research, recipients develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and help build enduring people-to-people links with Australia. 

Applicants are assessed on their professional and personal qualities, academic competence and, most importantly, their potential to impact on development challenges in thePhilippines.Applications are strongly encouraged from women, people with disability and other marginalised groups.


Priority fields of study

The priority areas of study for the Philippines are:

• Trade and Economics

• Infrastructure and Smart Cities

• Digital Economy and Cyber Security

• Peace and Development

• Education

• Governance and Public Policy, including CivilSociety, Media, and Foreign Relations

• Natural Resource Management, including Maritime,Mining, and Energy

• Humanitarian and Disaster Risk Management

• Health, including Public Health and Mental Health

• Foreign Relations


Level of study

Australia Awards scholarships provide citizens of the Philippines with the opportunity to obtain a qualification at an Australian tertiary institution.

Awards will be offered for commencement in January 2023 within the following allocations:

• Open category - individuals who intend to pursue graduate studies in the identified priority areas of study

• Targeted category – applicants nominated by partner Philippine government agencies whose mandates support the mutual priorities of Australia and the Philippines and the updated Philippine Development Plan.


Australia Awards benefits

Australia Awards scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian education institution, including any preparatory training.Scholarship recipients will receive the following:

• return air travel

• a one-off establishment allowance on arrival

• full tuition fees

• contribution to living expenses

• introductory academic program

• overseas student health cover for the duration of the scholarship

• supplementary academic support,

• fieldwork allowance for research students and masters by coursework which has a compulsory field work component.


Country-specific conditions

In addition to the eligibility requirements, candidates from the Philippines must also meet the following conditions:

• resident of the Philippines for at least 12 months

• has at least two years’ cumulative work experience

• not hold another scholarship

• master’s degree holder (for PhD applicants)

For study commencing in Australia in 2023: 

Opening date: 1 February 2022

Closing date: 29 April 2022 (11:59PM AEST)

Applications and/or supporting documents received after the closing date will not be considered.

Australia for ASEAN Scholarship

Ten students will be selected for an Australia for ASEANScholarship, a prestigious enhanced award announced to mark the Australia-ASEAN Comprehensive StrategicPartnership, and to advance the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP). This is available at Masters level only.

Selected students will also participate in an Indo-Pacific Emerging Leaders Program, which will provide a range of learning, networking and development opportunities.

The priority areas of study for an Australia for ASEANScholarship are the four key areas of the AOIP:

 Maritime

 Connectivity

 Economic

 Sustainable Development Cooperation

The selection process

• Applications will be shortlisted after eligibility checking

• Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for thepanel interview

• The selection process includes an interview. Applicants will be assessed against the following criteria : academic competency, potential outcome, specifically the contribution to development outcomes in the Philippines as evidenced by the REAPo professional and personal leadership attributes including relevant work experience.

• Successful candidates will be notified no later than August 2022

• Awardee travel will be subject to meeting the requirements imposed by the Australian Government, as determined by the Department of Education, Skills andEmployment, and must meet the requirements imposed by State and Territory governments.
