Establishment

Dr Andrew Zdenkowski and Dr Sue Outram would like to support students who will contribute to improving environmental sustainability in line with the environmental sustainability priorities of the College of Engineering, Science and Environment.

Applicants should demonstrate interest in practical solutions to support environmental sustainability and an understanding of the tensions between economic growth, increasing populations and environmental sustainability.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:

  • Be studying a program offered by the College of Engineering, Science and Environment (CESE) at the University of Newcastle.
  • Have an interest in practical solutions to support environmental sustainability.
  • Be enrolled full-time.
  • Demonstrate academic achievement either by an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent of 75 or higher for commencing students, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 for continuing students.
  • Not be the recipient of another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship concurrently.

Required Documentation

Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.

  • A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
  • A statement (500 words) outlining your interest in practical solutions to support environmental sustainability and your understanding of the tensions between economic growth, increasing populations and environmental sustainability.
  • Up to 3 documents which demonstrate your academic achievement, such as awards and acknowledgements, participation in enrichment and travel programs or internships, academic competitions or challenges, your portfolio and/or cv.
  • You may be required to provide documents to support your educational disadvantage claims. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.

Benefit

This scholarship is a one-off lump sum payment of $5,000 after the relevant census date.


Selection

Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.

Selection will be made by the College of Engineering, Science and Environment Selection Panel which will consist of a minimum of three members chosen by the PVC of the College.

During selection, the panel will consider eligibility criteria, personal statements, other supporting documentation, and academic merit. Where candidates are similarly ranked, they may also give preference to candidates who demonstrate the following (in order):

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants,
  • Applicants who have demonstrated an educational disadvantage as part of their scholarship application, and
  • Applicants who are in the 3rd or 4th (Honours) year of an undergraduate degree.

The Selection Panel will communicate the details of successful recipients to the delegated Scholarships Officer, and all applicants will be notified of an outcome via email. This will occur within 6 weeks of the scholarship application closing date.
