The Tertiary Access Payment (TAP) Program has been developed by the Australian Government to assist school leavers from regional and remote areas who relocate from their home to undertake full-time, higher level tertiary education (Certificate IV or above) in the year following Year 12 or equivalent.

Students can apply at Services Australia from 1 January 2024.

  • Faculty of Humanities
  • Faculty of Science & Engineering
    • Science courses
    • Engineering courses
    • Western Australian School of Mines (WASM)

  • Undergraduate

  • Students from regional or remote areas
  • Year twelve students

  • Australian Citizen

  • Need Based

The Tertiary Access Payment is a payment of $3,000 or $5,000. How much you can get depends on where your family home is located.

Scholarship Details

All undergraduate degrees

You need to be an eligible student moving away from home to study at a tertiary education provider. This payment is for those who study in the year following Year 12 or equivalent.

You must meet certain rules to get the payment. You must be all of the following:

  • Australian resident
  • meet study rules
  • from an inner regional, outer regional, remote or very remote area
  • relocate to study at an education provider or Regional University Centre at least 90 minutes by public transport from family home
  • undertaking a Certificate IV or above, at least 75 per cent of full time study load with a minimum duration of a year, in the year following completion of Year 12 or equivalent
  • studying face to face, or in dual delivery method, for at least part of the course
  • 22 years of age or under at the time of course commencement
  • have parents or guardians whose income is under the current combined parental income limit of $250,000

The TAP is unavailable to students who leave school before the end of Year 12 to pursue an apprenticeship

TAP is not considered ‘income for social security purposes’ and, where relevant, would not affect your eligibility for other income support.
