About this scholarship

Dr Grant Keady and his late wife Pat, a long-time sufferer of Parkinson's disease, have extensive firsthand experience as to how important community and hospital nurses are in making a difference in people's lives. Dr Keady is keen to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to take up nursing as a career. 

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nursing Scholarship will provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled within the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) at Curtin University in units towards the latter part of their degree to assist with their degree completion.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nursing Scholarship will provide the following support:

  • A total value of $7,500 paid as follows:
    • $2,500 in semester enrolled in Nursing Practice for Health Complexity 1 (CRIT3000)
    • $2,500 in semester enrolled in Psychosocial Care for Health Complexity (NURS3001)
    • $2,500 in semester enrolled in Transitional Nursing Practice (NURS4002)

The amount can be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards education related expenses.


Scholarship Details

Bachelor of Science (Nursing)


Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered eligible for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nursing Scholarship:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Enrolled minimum 50 credits in semester 2, 2024
  • Have a minimum course weighted average (CWA) of 55
  • Applicants must be enrolled in any of the below units to be considered eligible:
    • Nursing Practice for Health Complexity 1 (CRIT3000)
    • Psychosocial Care for Health Complexity (NURS3001)
    • Transitional Nursing Practice (NURS4002)


Application process

Step 1: Access application form

  • Application form can be accessed via the ‘My Studies’ tab in OASIS or via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
  • Please note that this link will direct you to the general "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program " application form. Once you submit your application, you will then be considered for all scholarships that you are eligible for in this round.

Step 2: Complete

  • Complete the application form online
  • Application form can be saved at any point of the process

Step 3: Submit

  • Closing date is listed at the top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel on OASIS
  • Incomplete applications will not be assessed
  • Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

  • Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

  • Applications for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Nursing Scholarship will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
    • Academic merit (CWA)

Step 6: Outcome

  • All successful and unsuccessful applicants notified of their outcome via the Scholarships Channel (Student OASIS) within 6-8 weeks of the scholarship closing date

Step 7: Acceptance

  • Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) by the deadline

Please note:

  • Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient merit


Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

  • Maintain a full-time or part-time (minimum 50 credits) enrolment in the Bachelor of Science (Nursing) each semester/study period at Curtin University
  • Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 55 each semester/study period
  • Fail no more than one unit each semester/study period*

*Recipients must pass the units for which the scholarship has been awarded
