About this scholarship
Description/Applicant information

‘Moorditj Maaman’ means ‘strong man’ in Nyungar language, and this Scholarship will support mature-aged Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander men to enter and succeed at Curtin University. This Scholarship recognises the resilience of underrepresented First Nations men pursuing higher education. We acknowledge that applicants will bring their own diverse life experiences, knowledge and cultural strengths as recipients of this Scholarship. 

The Moorditj Maaman Scholarship aims to empower Moorditj men with a sense of belonging and purpose to become strong leaders and role models within their families and communities. The Scholarship includes financial assistance, individualised mentoring for their career transition and dedicated support provided by a Moorditj Coordinator throughout their journey at Curtin.

Value

The Moorditj Maaman Scholarship will provide the following support for up to a maximum of 5 years (based on a full-time study load of 100 credits per semester):

• A total value of up to $10,000 per year paid as a cash stipend of $5,000 per semester. The amount can be used at the recipient’s discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses
• Support from a dedicated Moorditj Coordinator

All undergraduate degrees at Curtin University

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to be considered for the Moorditj Maaman Scholarship:

• Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
• Identify as male
• Be mature-aged (25 years of age or older)*
• Commencing or currently undertaking a pathway course or an undergraduate degree at Curtin University in semester 1, 2024
• Enrolled either full-time (100 credits) or part-time (minimum of 50 credits per semester) at Curtin University
• Be willing to share your story as a recipient of Moorditj Maaman Scholarship.

*Applicants between the ages of 21 and 24 years may be considered under special circumstances, at the discretion of the Scholarships Office. Please contact the Scholarships Office via email [email protected] or phone 9266 2992 by the closing date if this age range is applicable to you.

Application process

Step 1: Access online application form

• Applications are to be submitted using the online application form. Access the form by clicking on the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
• Please note that this link will direct you to the general "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program " application form. Once you submit your application, you will then be considered for all scholarships that you are eligible for in this round.

Step 2: Complete

• Complete the application form online
• Application form can be saved at any point of the process
• Tips on how to complete your application can be found under the Applying for scholarships link on the scholarships website

Step 3: Submit

• Closing date is listed at the top of the page
• Incomplete applications will not be assessed
• Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

• Application receipt will be sent to the email address provided when you created your Curtin account or your Curtin student email address, once your application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

• Applications for the Moorditj Maaman will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
  • Receipt of an offer of a place into a bridging course or undergraduate degree at Curtin University in 2024 (if applicable)
  • Responses to questions in application form
  • Optional:
    • Supporting references, including references from current and past teachers and/or community/organisation representatives
    • Recognising that applicants have different strengths (verbal over written), applicants can request a ‘yarn’ with the Moorditj Coordinator to support their application. Yarns will be arranged by the Scholarships Office and conducted after the application closing date in early December 
      
  • In Financial need or from a low social-economic background
  • Please note: Preference may be given to a particular traditional owner group or discipline

Step 6: Outcome

• Outcome will be sent via the email address listed through TISC or your Curtin student email address after main round offers (all successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified)

Step 7: Acceptance

• Successful applicants (including those who wish to defer their studies) must return acceptance documents by the deadline stipulated in the terms and conditions
• Deferral of this scholarship is not permitted

Please note:

• Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient need
• Scholarship is not transferable to another university

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

• Maintain an enrolment of at least 50 credit points each study period at Curtin University
• Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of 50 each study period
• Fail no more than one unit per study period
• Be willing to share your story as a recipient of Moorditj Maaman Scholarship.
