About this scholarship

The Robert Cunico Health and Safety Scholarship supports and encourages the next generation of health and safety professionals pursuing a career within the construction industry. The scholarship is in memory of Robert Cunico, who was involved in a fatal accident on a Perth construction site in April 2018.  
The scholarship also offers the recipient the opportunity to conduct the Professional Placement component of their degree in the second semester, for which the students can apply for credits from recognised learning (CRL) upon successful completion of the project.

The Robert Cunico Health and Safety Scholarship will provide the following support for up to one year (based on a full-time study load of 75 credits per semester):

  • A total value of up to $10,000 to be paid as a cash stipend of $5,000 per semester. The amount can be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses.
  • 150 hours of placement with CIVMEC as part of the OCHS3002 Health and Safety Professional Unit over a 10-week period (unpaid)
  • In addition, CIVMEC may offer the recipient paid vacation work upon completion of the degree which could possibly lead to a graduate employment option


Scholarship Details

  • Bachelor of Science (Health, Safety and Environment)


Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the Robert Cunico Health and Safety Scholarship:

  • Australian or New Zealand citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 75 credits per semester at Curtin University in semester 1, 2024
  • Enrolled in the 3rd year of study of an eligible course
  • Have a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 65
  • Not currently hold an externally sponsored scholarship


Application process

Step 1: Access application form

  • Application form can be accessed via the ‘My Studies’ tab in OASIS or via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
  • If you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student, and would like to be considered for all other scholarships (both equity as well as merit scholarships) available in this round, we recommend that you apply for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program here (only one application form to complete).

Step 2: Complete

  • Complete the application form online
  • Application form can be saved at any point of the process
  • Multiple scholarships can be applied for at one time
  • Tips on how to complete your application can be found on the ‘Applying for scholarships’ link on the scholarships website

Step 3: Submit

  • Closing date is listed at the top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel on OASIS
  • Incomplete applications will not be assessed
  • Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

  • Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

  • Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
    • Enrolled in the 3rd year of an eligible degree at Curtin University in semester 1, 2024
    • Academic merit
    • Responses to questions in application form
    • Passion for course / vision for career
    • Interview performance (for shortlisted applicants)

Step 6: Shortlist for Interview

  • Shortlisted applicants will be sent an interview date and time via their student email
  • Shortlisted applicants must be available for the designated interview time
    • Interviews will be scheduled between 8 and 17 April 2024

Step 7: Outcome

  • Successful and unsuccessful interview applicants will be notified of their outcome via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) within approximately two weeks of their interview date

Step 8: Acceptance

  • Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via Scholarship Channel by deadline

Please note:

  • Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient merit


Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

  • Remain enrolled in initial course of study that the scholarship was awarded for
  • Maintain a minimum of 75 credit points each semester at Curtin University
  • Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 65 each semester
  • Pass all units attempted each semester
  • Not apply for or receive any other externally sponsored scholarship/s whilst in receipt of the Robert Cunico Health and Safety Scholarship
