About this scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to support and encourage students to study metallurgy with the view of practicing as a qualified Metallurgist in the years to come.

Independent Metallurgical Operations (IMO) has been providing services to the mining industry since 1998. Focused on Metallurgy, IMO offer mining and exploration companies a range of technical expertise and operational support around the world.

The IMO Extractive Metallurgy Scholarship will provide the following support for up to a maximum of one year (based on a full-time enrolment of 100 credits):

  • A total value of up to $10,000 paid as a cash stipend of $5,000 per semester. The amount can be used at the recipient’s discretion to contribute towards education related expenses
  • Potential paid vacation employment with IMO for an agreed period (dependant on business operations and availability)

Scholarship Details

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) (Honours)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Metallurgical Engineering) (Honours)*
  • Bachelor of Science (Extractive Metallurgy)*

*Double degrees with this course are considered eligible

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the IMO Extractive Metallurgy Scholarship:

  • Australian or New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident, or an Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder
  • Enrolled full-time (minimum 75 credits) in the second or third year of an eligible degree in semester 2, 2024
  • Have a minimum course weighted average (CWA) of 55

Application process

Step 1: Access application form

  • Application form can be accessed via the ‘My Studies’ tab in OASIS or via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
  • If you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student and would like to be considered for all other scholarships (both equity as well as merit scholarships) available in this round, we recommend that you apply for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program here (only one application form to complete)

Step 2: Complete

  • Complete the application form online
  • Application form can be saved at any point of the process
  • Multiple scholarships can be applied for at one time
  • Applying for a scholarship - See guidelines and tips (including the interview preparation) on how to complete your application

Step 3: Submit

  • Closing date is listed at the top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel on OASIS
  • Incomplete applications will not be assessed
  • Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

  • Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

  • Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
    • Responses to questions in application form
    • Academic merit
    • Interview performance (for shortlisted applicants)

Step 6: Shortlist for Interview

  • Shortlisted applicants will be sent an interview date and time via their student email in late August
  • Shortlisted applicants must be available for the designated interview time (mid-September)
  • Unsuccessful applicants will be sent a notification via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS)

Step 7: Outcome

  • Successful and unsuccessful interview applicants will be notified of their outcome via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) within 6-8 weeks of closing date

Step 8: Acceptance

  • Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) by the deadline

Please note:

  • Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient merit

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

  • Remain enrolled in initial course of study
  • Maintain a full-time enrolment of at least 75 credits per semester at Curtin University
  • Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 55 each semester
  • Pass all units attempted each semester
