About this scholarship
The BHP Women in Metallurgy Scholarship is designed to uplift women in Metallurgy, providing financial support, mentorship, site visit opportunities, and 4th year research project aid. These benefits enable recipients to deepen their industry relationships, expand their professional networks, and thrive in a supportive environment.

The BHP Women in Metallurgy Scholarship will provide the following support for up to a maximum of three years (based on a full-time enrolment of 100 credits):
- A total value of up to $30,000 paid as a cash stipend of $5,000 per semester. The amount can be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses
- Mentorship opportunities which include:
- One scheduled engagement with mentor per term via phone or Webex
- One site visit per year with mentor or delegated mentor
- Access to mentor as required throughout the year
- Support from mentor on 4th year research project (project to be confirmed by Curtin supervisor in line with the University policies and procedures)

- Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Metallurgical Engineering Major)
- Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Metallurgical Engineering Major), Bachelor of Commerce
- Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) (Honours), Bachelor of Science (Extractive Metallurgy Major)
- Bachelor of Science (Science) (Extractive Metallurgy Major)
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to apply for the BHP Women in Metallurgy Scholarship:
- Identify as female
- Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder
- Enrolled full-time (minimum 75 credits) in the 2nd year* of an eligible course in Semester 2, 2023
- Have a minimum course weighted average (CWA) of 60
- Not currently in receipt of any other industry sponsored scholarships
*Double degrees and year level
- Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering) (Honours), Bachelor of Science (Extractive Metallurgy Major) students can be in their second or third year to be considered eligible (200-500 credits complete)
- Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Metallurgical Engineering Major), Bachelor of Commerce students can be in their second or third year or be commencing their fourth year to be considered eligible (200-600 credits complete)
Application process
Step 1: Access application form
- Application form can be accessed via the ‘My Studies’ tab in OASIS or via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
Step 2: Complete
- Complete the application form online
- Application form can be saved at any point of the process
- Multiple scholarships can be applied for at one time
- Tips on how to complete your application can be found on the ‘Applying for scholarships’ link on the scholarships website
Step 3: Submit
- Closing date is listed at the top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel (Student OASIS)
- Incomplete applications will not be assessed
- Once submitted, application status will change to submitted
Step 4: Receipt
- Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted
Step 5: Assessment
- Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
- Responses to questions in application form
- Academic merit
- Preference will be given to applicants with a permanent address in the areas below (in order of preference):
- Pilbara
- Goldfields
- Metro Perth
Step 6: Outcome
- All successful and unsuccessful applicants notified of their outcome via the Scholarships Channel (Student OASIS) within 2-3 weeks of the scholarship closing date
Step 7: Acceptance
- Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) by the deadline
Please note:
- Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient merit
Enrolment Requirements
Recipients must meet all of the following:
- Remain enrolled in initial course of study
- Maintain a full-time enrolment of at least 75 credits per semester at Curtin University
- Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 60 each semester
- Pass all units attempted each semester
- Not apply for or receive any other industry sponsored scholarships
