About this scholarship
Description/Applicant information

‘Moorditj Yorga’ means ‘strong woman’ in Nyungar language, and this Scholarship will support mature-aged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to enter and succeed at Curtin University. This Scholarship recognises and celebrates the contributions of First Nations women to their families and communities, and that applicants will bring their own diverse life experience and knowledge as a recipient of this Scholarship. 

The Moorditj Yorga Scholarship will help Moorditj women to enter university, successfully pass their first degree, and receive individualised mentoring as they transition into their careers. It aims to build upon their own personal and cultural strengths, enabling them to become strong leaders and role models within their own families and communities, and in doing so, helping Australia grow and prosper. Recipients of this Scholarship will also receive support from a dedicated Moorditj Yorga Coordinator throughout their time at Curtin.

Value

The Moorditj Yorga Scholarship will provide the following support for up to a maximum of 5 years (based on a full-time study load of 100 credits per semester):

• A total value of up to $10,000 paid as a cash stipend of $5,000 per semester. The amount can be used at the recipient’s discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses
• Support from a dedicated Moorditj Yorga Coordinator

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to be considered for the Moorditj Yorga Scholarship:

• Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
• Identify as female
• Be mature-aged (25 years of age or older) *
• Commencing or currently undertaking a pathway course or an undergraduate degree at Curtin University in semester 1, 2023
• There are two offerings available for this round. For one of the offerings, all courses are eligible for students from the Eastern Guruma Native Title Group (near Karratha only) Traditional Owner Group.
• For the other offering, students must be enrolled in an eligible course to be considered (from any Traditional Owner Group). The below are the eligible courses:
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Petroleum, Chemical, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical, Civil and Construction)
  • Bachelor of Science (Applied Geology)
  • Bachelor of Applied Geology
  • Bachelor of Science (Health Promotion or Health, Safety and Environment)
  • Bachelor of Science (Psychology) and Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations)
  • Bachelor of Science (Environmental Science, Coastal and Marine Science)
  • Bachelor of Science (Information Technology)
  • Bachelor of Arts (Anthropology and Sociology)
  • Bachelor of Information Technology
  • Bachelor of Computing
  • Bachelor of Commerce
  • Bachelor of Laws
  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management)
• Enrolled either full-time (100 credits) or part-time (minimum of 50 credits per semester) at Curtin University
• A minimum course weight average (CWA) of 50 (if applicable) *

*Applicants between the ages of 21 and 24 years may be considered under special circumstances, at the discretion of the Scholarships Office. Please contact the Scholarships Office via email [email protected] or phone 9266 2992 by the closing date if this age range is applicable to you.
*Applicants with a CWA of less than 50 may be considered under special circumstances, at the discretion of the Scholarships Office.

Application process

Step 1: Access online application form

• Applications are to be submitted using the online application form. Access the form by clicking on the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
• Please note that this link will direct you to the general "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program" application form. Once you submit your application, you will then be considered for all scholarships that you are eligible for in this round.

Step 2: Complete

• Complete the application form online
• Application form can be saved at any point of the process
• Tips on how to complete your application can be found under the Applying for scholarships link on the scholarships website

Step 3: Submit

• Closing date is listed at the top of the page
• Incomplete applications will not be assessed
• Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

• Application receipt will be sent to the email address provided when you created your Curtin account or your Curtin student email address, once your application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

• Applications for the Moorditj Yorga will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
  • Receipt of an offer of a place into a pathway course or undergraduate degree at Curtin University in 2023 (if applicable)
  • Responses to questions in application form
  • Optional:
    • Supporting references, including references from current and past teachers and/or community/organisation representatives
    • Recognising that applicants have different strengths (verbal over written), applicants can request a ‘yarn’ with the Moorditj Yorga Coordinator to support their application. Yarns will be arranged by the Scholarships Office and conducted after the application closing date in early December 
      
  • Socio-economic status
  • Allocations for this round will be based on the following:
    • Traditional Owner Group- Eastern Guruma Native Title Group near Karratha only, or;
    • Enrolled in one of the following courses*:
      • Bachelor of Engineering (Petroleum, Chemical, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical, Civil and Construction)
      • Bachelor of Science (Applied Geology)
      • Bachelor of Applied Geology
      • Bachelor of Science (Health Promotion or Health, Safety and Environment)

*Preference will be given to students enrolled in a Science or Engineering course from a specific language group.

Step 6: Outcome

• Outcome will be sent via the email address listed through TISC or your Curtin student email address after main round offers (all successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified)

Step 7: Acceptance

• Successful applicants (including those who wish to defer their studies) must return acceptance documents by the deadline stipulated in the terms and conditions
• Deferral of this scholarship is not permitted

Please note:

• Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient need
• Scholarship is not transferable to another university

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must meet all of the following:

• Maintain an enrolment of at least 50 credit points each study period at Curtin University
• Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) 50 each study period
• Fail no more than one unit per study period
