About this scholarship

"This project aims to develop new exotic alloy systems through the utilisation of Curtin’s recently developed metal 3D printing research infrastructures. Curtin has launched a 3D printing hub called ‘3D Printing MicroFactory for Additive Manufacturing’. The hub includes Bound Metal Deposition (BMD) and Direct Energy Deposition (DED) technologies, and thus, offers an enormous opportunity to manufacture both monolithic alloys and exotic combinations of alloy mixtures. The latter is an alloy equivalent to the conventional multi-color printer systems.
The metal printers at Curtin 3D MicroFactory are operational alongside the world-class metal characterisation and testing facilities that enable characterising at macro-micro-nano length scales to develop an understanding of the structure/properties relationships. Thus, the suitability of the developed functionally targeted alloys will be practically tested for service applications for the Oil & Gas, Mining and Marine sectors.

A key component of the project is to develop materials at reduced emission to the environment because the aimed (a) additive processes require less material usage than the subtractive counterparts and (b) stronger alloy systems are long-lasting than conventional alloys and (c) can serve the same or even better function at lighter weight, and therefore require less fuel consumptions to drive. Curtin’s new 4kW laser-based, multi-nozzle and six-axis robotic DED system will enable the development of such a complex combination of alloys that have never been imagined from conventional manufacturing processes. Therefore, the program aims the development of Carbon neutral alloys.

The PhD researchers will also be able to research closely with Curtin’s industry partners in metal powder manufacturing and laser manufacturing technology sectors. And also with the end-users in the Oil & Gas, marine, and shipbuilding sectors.

At the successful completion of the PhD, the candidate will develop a number of attributes in the area of materials science, 3D metal printing, alloy development, advanced characterisations and industry demand-driven research leadership."
