About this scholarship

This is a cross- discipline; cross-school project, bringing together academics with complementing expertise in cognitive neuropsychology, neuroscience, and cross-cultural psychology. The team speaks 5 languages across its members.
This PhD project is associated with an Australian Research Council Project (DP190101490) that focuses on understanding the cognitive and linguistic factors influencing speech production in monolingual and bilingual adult speakers, both in the healthy population and in the language-impaired population (e.g., with post-stroke aphasia).
This project offers diverse opportunities to answer the following broad topic questions that could be approached with different methodologies and approaches that span across the expertise of the supervisory team. For example, does learning a second language later in life enhance non-linguistic cognitive skills (such as attention)? What is the influence of similar sounding words across languages on the first or second language spoken? What are the non-linguistic and linguistic effects on the first language when a second language is spoken over a long period of time? What other cross-language influences on speech errors can be observed? These questions can be explored in the healthy as well as in the language-impaired context.
Overall, this research area aims to understand in more detail how language is organised in bi- / multi-lingual speakers and what factors are influencing their language performance. Once the influencing factors are determined, they can serve as a 'testing bed’ for the language-impaired context. There is scope for working with people with aphasia (language-impairment) for part of the PhD project, should the candidate bring a background in speech pathology, clinical linguistics, and/or patho-linguistics.

An Internship opportunity may also be available with this project.
