About this scholarship

The Michael Spratt Scholarship was established to honour the memory of Michael Spratt, a colleague and friend of Neometals Ltd. The purpose of the Scholarship is to support a final year student undertaking an eligible engineering or science degree at Curtin. 

Neometals innovatively develops opportunities in minerals and advanced materials essential for a sustainable future. With a focus on the energy storage megatrend, the strategy revolves around de-risking and developing long life projects with strong partners and integrating down the value chain to increase margins and return value to shareholders.

The Michael Spratt Scholarship will provide the following support for up to one year (based on full-time enrolment of 100 credits per semester):

  • A total value of $15,000 paid as a cash stipend of $7,500 per semester. The stipend may be used at the recipient’s discretion to contribute towards education-related expenses such as text books and/or general living expenses.
  • Vacation work at Neometals 


Scholarship Details

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering), Bachelor of Science (Extractive Metallurgy) double-degree
  • Bachelor of Science (Extractive Metallurgy)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Metallurgical Engineering)


Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for the Michael Spratt Scholarship:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa holder
  • Be enrolled full-time (100 credits) in final year of an eligible course in semester 1, 2023
  • Have a minimum CWA of 60
  • Be interested and willing to participate in work experience opportunity with Neometals
  • Not be in receipt of any other industry sponsored scholarship


Application process

Step 1: Access application form

  • Application form can be accessed via ‘My Studies’ tab in OASIS or via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
  • If you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student, and would like to be considered for all other scholarships (both equity as well as merit scholarships) available in this round, we recommend that you apply for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program here (only one application form to complete).

Step 2: Complete

  • Complete the application form online
  • Application form can be saved at any point of the process
  • Multiple scholarships can be applied for at one time
  • Tips on how to complete your application can be found on the ‘Applying for scholarships’ page on the scholarships website

Step 3: Submit

  • Closing date is listed at the top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel on OASIS
  • Incomplete applications will not be assessed
  • Once submitted, application status will change to submitted

Step 4: Receipt

  • Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted

Step 5: Assessment

  • Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
    • Academic merit
    • Responses to questions in application form:
      • Demonstrate independence and leadership (or leadership potential)
      • Demonstrate active citizenship in the Curtin or Kalgoorlie community, or their program of study
    • Interview performance (for shortlisted applicants)
    • Preference will be given to students studying at the Kalgoorlie Campus

Step 6: Shortlist for Interview

  • Shortlisted applicants will be sent an interview date and time via their student email
  • Shortlisted applicants must be available for designated interview time
    • Interviews will be conducted between 29 March 2023 and 6 April 2023

Step 7: Outcome

  • Successful and unsuccessful interview applicants will be notified of their outcome via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) within approximately two weeks of their interview date

Step 8: Acceptance

  • Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) by the deadline
