About this scholarship
The Kate Mullin Scholarship for On Country Teacher Education Training Program (OCTE) Scholarship aims to support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students undertaking an undergraduate Bachelor of Education (Primary Education), who is enrolled in the On Country Teacher Education Training Program (OCTE) and intend to teach in Aboriginal schools.
Kate Mullin was a passionate and visionary ESL Literacy consultant who made significant and far-reaching contributions to Aboriginal literacy in Western Australia (WA). She developed excellent relationships with a wide range of Aboriginal schools in WA which enabled the improvements in student literacy. The Kate Mullin Association is a network of teachers, literacy coordinators and researchers, and committed friends of Kate’s who want to grow her legacy in Aboriginal literacy.

The Kate Mullin Scholarship for On Country Teacher Education Training Program (OCTE) Scholarship will provide the following support for up to a maximum of one year (based on a full-time student load of 50 credits per trimester):
- A total value of $5,000 paid as a cash stipend of $1666.66 per trimester.
The amount can be used at the recipient's discretion to contribute towards educational related expenses.
Scholarship Details
Bachelor of Education (Primary Education) and enrolled in the On Country Teacher Education Training Program
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered eligible to apply for the Kate Mullin Scholarship for On Country Teacher Education Training Program (OCTE) Scholarship:
- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent
- Be enrolled in the On Country Teacher Education Training Program at Curtin University
- Be enrolled full-time (50 credits) in trimester 1, 2023
- Have a minimum Course Weighted Average (CWA) of 65 or ATAR of 70
Application process
Step 1: Access application form
- Application form can be accessed via the ‘My Studies’ tab in OASIS or via the ‘Apply Online’ button on the top right-hand side of this page
- Please note that this link will direct you to the general "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Program" application form. Once you submit your application, you will then be considered for all scholarships that you are eligible for in this round.
Step 2: Complete
- Complete the application form online
- Application form can be saved at any point of the process
- Tips on how to complete your application can be found on the ‘Applying for scholarships’ link on the scholarships website
Step 3: Submit
- Closing date is listed at the top of the page and within the Scholarships Channel on OASIS
- Incomplete applications will not be assessed
- Once submitted, application status will change to submitted
Step 4: Receipt
- Application receipt will be sent to student email once application has been submitted
Step 5: Assessment
- Applications will be assessed by an assessment panel using the following criteria:
- Responses to questions in application form
- Academic merit
- Demonstrate an intention/desire to teach in a WA Aboriginal school upon graduation
- Preference will be given to students who are:
- From Western Australia
- In their second, third or fourth year of study
Step 6: Outcome
- All successful and unsuccessful applicants notified of their outcome via the Scholarships Channel (Student OASIS) within 6-8 weeks of the scholarship closing date
Step 7: Acceptance
- Successful applicants must accept the terms and conditions via the Scholarship Channel (Student OASIS) by the deadline
Please note:
- Scholarship will be awarded if there are applicants of sufficient need
Enrolment Requirements
Recipients must meet all of the following:
- Remain enrolled in initial course of study and OCTE Program
- Maintain a full-time enrolment of 50 credits per trimester at Curtin University
- Maintain a course weighted average (CWA) of at least 65 each study period
- Must pass all units attempted
- Recipient may seek other scholarship opportunities while in receipt of this scholarship
