About this scholarship

The John Monash Scholarships recognise excellence and leadership, and celebrate one of Australia’s finest leaders: General Sir John Monash. Each year the Scholarships are awarded to outstanding Australian graduates to enable them to study for a Masters or Doctoral degree at the world’s best universities. Successful applicants have shown excellence in their field, demonstrated leadership skills, and have a vision for how they can contribute to a better Australia.

The John Monash Scholarships recognise excellence and leadership, and celebrate one of Australia’s finest leaders: General Sir John Monash. Each year the Scholarships are awarded to outstanding Australian graduates to enable them to study for a Masters or Doctoral degree at the world’s best universities. Successful applicants have shown excellence in their field, demonstrated leadership skills, and have a vision for how they can contribute to a better Australia.

Each year, up to twenty Scholarships will be made available. Each scholarship is valued at AUD $70,000 per year for a maximum of three years (up to AUD $210,000).


Scholarship Details

Your field of study is unlimited. For example, John Monash Scholars have included those studying, Clinical Medicine and Medical Research, Civil Law, Climate Change, Economic History, Engineering, Environmental Protection, Fine Arts, Genomics, Geophysics, Indigenous Affairs, Mathematics, Population Health, Public Policy, Statistics, Sustainability, Unmanned Aircraft Systems, and Veterinary Science to name only some of the fields of study.
If you can clearly articulate how your study, your plan and your potential leadership in your field will be of direct benefit to Australia and the world, you should apply.


To be eligible to apply for a John Monash Scholarship you must:

  • Be an Australian Citizen
  • Have completed or be about to complete an undergraduate degree from an Australian University, and;
  • Be planning to undertake postgraduate study (Master or PhD) at an overseas university commencing in the calendar year following the year of application and selection. It is not necessary to have already been accepted to the institution at the time of application.
  • Be able to argue the merits of your chosen course, institution and how they are best positioned to drive progress in the chosen field of study.

The Scholarships support any postgraduate degree however the applicant must be able to argue the merits of the chosen course and institution. The Foundation encourages applicants to look beyond the ‘big name’ Universities and explore where dynamic, innovative work is being done in their field. You should select an institution and degree based on it being the best place in the world for your desired impact.

  • The John Monash Scholarships are not limited by age, gender, or academic field of study.

Selection Criteria:
In awarding John Monash Scholarships, factors considered include:

  • Excellence, may be evidenced through a degree obtained with outstanding results. It can also be demonstrated through prizes, awards, publications, performances, exhibitions, enterprises and excellence in professional endeavours.
  • Leadership, candidates should demonstrate leadership experience or potential. This can come from their studies, professional environments and/or the community.
  • Citizenship, a clearly identified career pathway that evidences your ability to contribute to Australia and a clear career trajectory that demonstrates the benefit to society. This includes a well-developed case for choosing a university relevant to the proposed area of study.
  • Three references are required with your application. Refer to the FAQ for more details


Application process

Apply online

Go online to www.johnmonash.com and complete your initial written application.

Successful candidates will proceed through a three-tier selection panel process: First Review, State Selection Panel and National Selection Panel. If recommended you may be approved by the Board and offered a scholarship.

Applications open 1 May 2022 and close the 14th of July 2022 (11.59pm AEST).
