About this scholarship

The MRIWA Indigenous Postgraduate Research Scholarship is offered annually by the Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA) to encourage and enable an Indigenous Australian student of exceptional research promise to undertake postgraduate research studies in any discipline relevant to the minerals industry of Western Australia. The scholarship is tenable at any university in WA, and can be held by a student undertaking a Higher Degree by Research.

This scholarship provides a stipend of up to $38,689 per annum (paid fortnightly) and $5,527 annually to support research expenses and travel. Payable for up to three years, with possibility of a 6-month extension.

The successful candidate must enrol in a postgraduate degree by research focused in a research project approved by MRIWA as meeting the published research priorities of the institute. Scholarship tenure can be continued from a Masters Degree by Research to a PhD program, subject to approval by MRIWA 


Applicants are required to provide evidence of their Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status. This would usually take the form of confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status under the common seal of a community organisation. Where exceptional circumstances apply, statutory declarations and other forms of documentation may be considered. Original or certified copies of supporting documentation must be provided. The successful candidate must meet the minimum academic entry requirement for admission into the relevant Higher Degree by Research program at Curtin University https://research.curtin.edu.au/postgraduate/
 


Application process

Applicants for the MRIWA Indigenous Postgraduate Research Scholarship must have applied for entry to an eligible postgraduate degree program at their intended host university, and submit a completed application form and research proposal to MRIWA before the closing date. Application forms and templates will be available from MRIWA (mriwa.wa.gov.au ) from July 1st, 2023.

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must remain enroled and in good standing on an eligible postgraduate degree program at their host university.
