About this scholarship

A fully funded 3-year PhD project on geochronology and volatile quantification has opened up as part of an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award. The largest Phanerozoic large igneous province, Ontong Java, is associated with oceanic anoxia some 120 million years ago, but it did not dramatically affect the biosphere. Ontong Java remains poorly understood, both in terms of its age and its volatile content. Your work will involve applying state-of-the-art geochronological techniques with quantitative compositional analysis of melt inclusions to decipher why the Ontong Java LIP had a relatively minor environmental perturbance despite its enormous size.
