About this scholarship

The scholarship recipient will work under Curtin University Node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (CEVAW) . The PhD project will apply cutting-edge quantitative methods to the analysis of large datasets from selected developing countries of Southeast Asia to contribute to a research agenda on the causal role that formal and informal institutions, including the absence of institutional protections, play in prevalence and prevention of various forms of violence against women. The PhD scholar will benefit from unique supervision and mentoring opportunities afforded by CEVAW’s Chief Investigators from different Australian universities as well as networking opportunities across academia and industry through CEVAW’s partner organisations, nationally and internationally.

CEVAW is the world’s first Centre to tackle the full range of forms of violence against women in Australia and the Indo-Pacific region. CEVAW aims to transform our understanding of the problem by examining the structural drivers that cause and compound violence against women (VAW), and pioneering new, evidence-based approaches to inform trajectory-altering practice and policy. CEVAW will generate fundamental knowledge on the causes of violence, the contexts in which it occurs, and the most effective and efficient responses. This interdisciplinary research will be data-driven, Indigenous-centred and co-designed with partners.  CEVAW brings together over 40 world-leading experts to develop scalable approaches to eliminate violence against women across the legal, security, economic, health, and political systems of Australia and the region. Headquartered at Monash University, CEVAW comprises 14 chief investigators at seven Australian institutions, 17 partner investigators at 15 institutions worldwide, 33 partner organisations and over 100 HDR students and postdoctoral fellows.  By building strategic and strong partnerships with Australian and international research institutions and partner organisations, CEVAW will translate research into innovative tools and strengthened capacity to drive the elimination of violence against women. With almost $50M investment from the ARC and contributing organisations, CEVAW is poised to make a significant, global impact.

This scholarship provides a tuition fee offset and a living stipend of $32,250 per year, based on full-time studies, for 3 years with 6 months extension possibility. Additionally, the Bankwest Curtin Economics Center offers a 33% enhancement to the scholarship ($10,642.5 per year) as a further support to personal expenses including health insurance fees.

PhD in Economics


  • The applicant must have completed a Bachelor degree with First Class Honours in economics, statistics or related disciplines, or be regarded as having an equivalent level of attainment.
  • The applicant must have demonstrated strong background and skills in quantitative analysis.
  • The applicant should meet the language requirement set for entry to Curtin’s PhD in Economics degree.
  • The applicant should meet the admission requirement set for entry to Curtin’s PhD in Economics degree. Enrolment Requirements
