About this scholarship

Impact cratering is a common geologic process for the entire Solar System. While Earth's moon has many craters visible on its surface, the Earth itself only has 200 or so confirmed impact structures. Of those 200, almost 30 is in Australia. There are about that many suspected impact sites. Numerical impact modelling has been a cutting edge tool to simulate the formation of these impact craters. This teaches us of the consequences of impacts on the structure and evolution of the crust and upper mantle over geologic history. Some impact crater sites have been associated with significant economic deposits, which were brought to the surface or produced as a consequence of the impact event. This project will research the Australian remote sensing geophysical data using the latest developments in deep learning and data analytics. Modern methods based on deep convolutional neural networks have shown great potential in processing the spatially linked geophysical data. This makes them an ideal choice for processing gravitational, magnetic and seismic measurements and linking data and different scales. All of these would be consolidated in efforts to uncover more impact crater sites in Australia, and potentially worldwide.
