About this scholarship

Britta Biedermann(1), Welber Marinovic(2) and Takeshi Hamamura(2)
Curtin School of Allied Health (1), School of Population Health(2). This is a cross-discipline; cross-school project, bringing together academics with complementing expertise in cognitive neuropsychology, neuroscience, and cross-cultural psychology. The team speaks 5 languages across its members.
This PhD project is associated with an Australian Research Council Project that focuses on understanding the factors influencing speech production in monolingual and bilingual adult speakers, both in unimpaired speakers and those with acquired language impairment (aphasia).
The successful candidate will contribute to the unimpaired speaker components of this project. With the support of the supervisory team this project offers diverse opportunities. For example, does learning a second language later in life can enhance non-linguistic cognitive skills (such as attention)? What is the influence of similar sounding words across languages on the first or second language spoken? What are the non-linguistic and linguistic effects on the first language when a second language is spoken over a long period of time? What other cross-language influences on speech errors can be observed? What is the influence of learning another language on cultural awareness?
Overall, this research area aims to understand in more detail how language is organised in healthy multi-lingual speakers and what factors are influencing their language performance. Once the influencing factors are determined, they can serve as a 'testing bed for the language-impaired context.
