Summary of Duties:

The Veterinary Technician Assistant-Veterinary Teaching Hospital will provide support during transport, restraint, examination, diagnostic procedures, work-up, treatment, induction, anesthesia, surgery and recovery of animals under emergency and routine hospital care.  May assist in all aspects of patient care including feeding, maintaining hospital cleanliness, and observing animals for sickness or abnormalities. May set up areas for procedures, including stocking and cleaning of treatment and ward locations. May receive and discharge patients to designated clients or their representative and maintain case log database for callbacks, fiscal estimates and final bills, RDVM information, and case numbers. Multiple positions available throughout the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in large and small animal services.

Small Animal Surgery-This position will work within the Small Animal Surgery unit of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in support of both orthopedic and soft tissue surgery activity.  It will provide veterinary technician assistant support by assisting in all aspects of surgical care and treatment of all small animal species presented to the service.  Will assist with surgery and specialized equipment set-up and tear-down, collection of specimens, restocking and cleaning, and will perform other basic skilled veterinary technician assistant duties.  Must have excellent communication skills and desire to work in a high-functioning animal health care team.

Float Pool/Small Animal Critical Care: Within the WSU Critical Care Unit technician assistants will work primarily with dogs and cats, as well as with the occasional small exotic pet or non-domestic animal species. This position will assist with procedures work up, treatment, and maintenance of hospitalized cases as well as incoming emergencies. Duties will also include feeding and walking animals, supporting hospital cleanliness, assisting in monitoring vitals, restraint of patients for examination or treatment, help with collecting lab samples, and general patient observation. Other tasks would include ordering and stocking inventory and maintaining supplies and equipment. This is a very busy service that generally requires good multi-tasking and communication skills.  May require night/weekend shifts

Required Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience as an Animal Technician 2; OR equivalent education/experience.

  • Must pass WSU radiation safety training exam first time it is available.

  • Ability to work a variable shift that may include 10 hour shifts and/or weekends, overnights and evenings. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a veterinary hospital or clinic.

Monthly Salary: Range 34 | $2,940 to $3,883 (Step A-M) | Successful candidates typically begin at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.  WSU offers a comprehensive benefits package which includes: paid sick and vacation leave; paid holidays; medical, dental, life and disability insurance package for employees and dependents; retirement; deferred compensation and optional supplemental retirement accounts.
