Position Details:

Summary of Duties:

Under the direction of the Director of TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS), the Academic Coordinator/Retention Specialist is responsible for implementing systems and methods for student programs and services; advising and counseling of students in an effort to increase retention, academic achievement and graduation rates; develops individual academic plans and maintains case notes and records of meetings; coordinate tutoring and instruct class; assist Director in preparing comprehensive reports pertaining to TRIO SSS program goals, achievements, and evaluations; update and maintain related database; assist with outreach and retention activities; prepare University policy, procedures and updates; develop and participate in student workshops; functions as a liaison with University faculty, supervisors, and internal and external constituents; monitoring and evaluating student services and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement; serve on committees and professional development opportunities as assigned; support Student Affairs and the University strategic plan; utilize working knowledge of policies, principles and procedures of federal regulations outlined in the TRIO SSS grant under the U.S. Department of Education; supervise tutoring staff.

Student Support Services is a program that is funded by the U. S. Department of Education Title IV under the Higher Education Act 1965 to assist Low-Income, First Generation and/or Disabled Students achieve a college education. Preference will be given to applicants with backgrounds similar to participants. This position is renewable based on the life cycle of federal funding.


Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. Experience leading or directing the work of others. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Development, Counseling Psychology or relevant social science discipline.

  • Experience counseling/advising students in a higher education environment.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience creating and conducting presentations.

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office including Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and positively in a diverse environment.

  • Attention to details, organized, and ability to multi-task to meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.

  • Experience interpreting and applying federal regulations and policies.

  • Experience working with a diverse group of students and their families such as first-generation students, low-income students, students with disabilities, and/or ethnically diverse student populations.

  • Prior experience with TRIO programs or like programs.

  • Personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those faced by Student Support Services students.

  • Experience teaching, advising, facilitating small groups, tutoring, and/or providing other project related student services.

  • Bilingual: fluent oral and written communication skills in a language other than English.

  • Experience working with WSU student information systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise professional judgment and leadership, including the ability to work independently.

  • Ability to form working relationships within the office, university and outside agencies and has a strong team attitude and approach.

  • Familiarity with Washington State University academic rules and regulations.

  • Experience with Washington State University business policies and procedures and/or federal grant regulations, especially with the TRIO Student Support Services program.

  • Must have or be able to obtain at time of hire a valid driver’s license.
